China Coronavirus: Corona cases are not taking the name of decreasing in China. The government may have relaxed the Zero Covid policy in view of the protests by the citizens, but perhaps it has not made any difference to the cases of Corona. A health advisor to the Chinese government has said that China is facing a surge in COVID-19 cases after partially easing aspects of its so-called Zero COVID policy.

On Sunday, top epidemiologist Zhong Nanshan told in an interview to the government media that the cases of corona may increase rapidly in the coming times as the government has started relaxing the Kovid restrictions. Zhong Nanshan has attributed the relaxation of the zero covid policy and the decline in corona testing mainly to the new cases.

Corona, Demonstration and Zero Covid Policy

It is noteworthy that in the past, there was a significant increase in the cases of corona in China, after which the government strictly implemented the Zero Covid policy. Citizens started protesting against the Corona restrictions and thousands of people took to the streets. The demonstrations took a violent form. After this, the Chinese government was forced to reconsider its decisions and as a result restrictions were relaxed in many states.

Health advisor Zhong has advised the Chinese government. He said, “Currently the Omicron mutation is very contagious and one person can transmit the virus to 22 people.” The top health official further said, “The epidemic is spreading rapidly in China right now, and under such circumstances, no matter how strong prevention and control is, it will be difficult to completely cut the transmission chain.”

Difficulties increased for the elderly population

The warning of the Chinese health advisor has further increased the concerns of the country. Especially for the elderly population, now the biggest challenge is to deal with Corona. According to reports, the government has stepped up the vaccination campaign for the elderly but it may take months to complete.

Shortage of ICU beds in the country

On Friday, Xiao Yahui, director of the Department of Medical Affairs at the National Health Commission, warned that there is only one intensive care unit bed (ICU bed) for 10,000 people in the country. He said that 1,06,000 doctors and 1,77,700 nurses would be shifted to ICUs to deal with the spike in coronavirus patients. However, he did not say how this would affect the health system’s ability to treat other diseases.
